North East Marine Sector Profile

The marine sector combines a wide range of skills and subjects. Due to its uniqueness the maritime industry can employ staff from almost all types and levels of education and training.

Despite the fact that shipyards are almost gone from the Tyne, Wear and Tees other parts of the industry have moved to the area and are flourishing. As such the North East offers a wide spread of jobs that are related to marine topics.

Within the whole of the UK the Marine Industry contributes to a large section of the economy and within the sector the breakdown is as follows:

The marine industry that can be found in the North East is:

• Marine design, engineering and consultancy: Design, engineering and testing services for the wide marine industry.
• Marine leisure and Fisheries: Boatbuilding, small craft equipment and fisheries.
• Offshore: Design, construction and repair of offshore marine structures.
• Subsea and pipeline: Design, construction and consultancy of subsea and pipeline systems.
• Classification Societies: Surveying and inspections of ships and other marine structures.
• Insurance: Party liability insurance, hull and machinery insurance and salvage
• Maritime law and trade: Law firms.
• Shipping Companies: Ship owners and operators.
• Port services and authorities: Maritime services, loading/unloading and security.
• National Associations: Trade Associations.
